ANTI-AMNESTY MARCH

Paramaribo, the 10th of April 2012.

A silent march to demonstrate against the amnesty legislation which was passed in the National Assembly a week earlier.

The controversial amnesty law provides impunity for several suspects, including Suriname’s president for the extra-judicial killing of 15 opponents of Bouterse’s then military government on December 8, 1982 in the Fort Zeelandia military headquarters.

This march was organized by civil groups and religious organizations. About 5,000 individuals took part in the demonstration, among them Madelon Menke, sister of Speaker of the House Jenny Geerlings-Simons. Menke taped her mouth along the entire route carrying a placard with the slogan “Words are not enough”.
